Onanuga’s ‘no hunger’ remark sparks criticism, as Tinubu policies come under scrutiny

Onanuga’s ‘no hunger’ remark

A fresh debate over the state of Nigeria’s economy and the living conditions of citizens erupted yesterday, after Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said he does not personally see the level of hunger frequently highlighted in public discourse, drawing a sharp rebuke from Arise Television anchor, Rufai Oseni.

Recall thst speaking during a television programme, Onanuga defended the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that several government initiatives and infrastructure projects are already delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians.

According to him, improvements in road infrastructure provide visible evidence of progress under the current administration. He recounted a recent trip from Ibadan to Lagos during which he diverted through Ijebu-Ode and was impressed by the quality of newly constructed concrete roads. “I found that our people, I mean, our Ijebu people, have stopped complaining. I said, ‘Oh, no wonder they now have a brand new road that’s not just an asphalt road, a concrete road”, he said.

While acknowledging that Nigerians face economic challenges, Onanuga maintained that public discussions often overlook the gains recorded by the administration. “I don’t see the level of hunger people are talking about; because I see them, and I keep asking them questions: how are things, how are they adjusting, what are the problems?” he said.

However, his remarks triggered strong criticism from Rufai Oseni, who accused the presidential aide of being disconnected from the realities confronting ordinary Nigerians.

Speaking during a programme, Oseni challenged Onanuga to publicly affirm that the number of Nigerians seeking financial assistance from him had not increased since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. “Bayo Onanuga should swear with the Bible that the number of Nigerians begging him for urgent ₦2,000 has not increased since Tinubu came to power”, Rufai said.

The broadcaster described Onanuga’s assessment of the economic situation as ignorant, and insisted that the daily experiences of millions of Nigerians contradict claims that hardship and hunger are being exaggerated.
